It's Time to Talk About Backup...yes again

Seriously.

If you're reading this and you really don't have a backup plan except intermittent exports of photos to an external drive - I'm talking to you. 

You deserve better and so do your photos.

I promise it really isn't that hard.

The optimal backup plan includes automatic backup to your external drive (i.e. Syncback for Windows and Time Machine for Macs).

The other part of the backup plan includes off site backup.  This way if there is a fire or flood or thief that takes all your stuff, you still have your photos and important stuff.

Half the battle is setting this stuff up.  Believe me - I know what a pain it can be but I also know how painful it can be if you don't.  Try sorting through 100,000 recovered images with pixels missing because you accidentally deleted them - oh and did I mention in those 100,000 photos you just need to find 10 extremly important photos you need?  I've been there and done that - it's no fun - promise.

I'm still using Backblaze and LOVING IT.  I have students who use everything from Carbonite, Dolly Drive, Mozy to Crash Plan and they are all happy too.  The point is to just get an off-site plan...I am serious - do it THIS WEEK.

Then the next time something happens to your computer's drive it is a matter of getting things back rather than losing everything...

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I can't even begin to tell you how many times backup has saved me, my projects and my photos.   Not to mention all the stories I hear in my class from students.

Newsflash:  The need for backup is REAL.

I really can't say enough about it.  And I promise I'll be talking about it again on this blog.   Because I care about you and your photos.

Really, I'm just trying to help - guilting you to action...  now will you go and do something about it and come back and report????

Hi Kayla! I was just looking at my LR catalog via Windows Explorer and realized it was way huge because I back it up like every time I launch LR, lol. Anyhow, if I zip and save the actual catalog to a different location (just in case something happens to my internal harddrive), can I "restore" the catalog in any way should such an event happen?

You can - I usually delete all my backups except for about the most recent month. I do daily backups so they add up quick. Hope that helps!
