Step Out of your Color Comfort Zone

Article written by : karooch from Scraps of Mind

I wrote an article on Scraps of mind a few weeks ago on How to Choose Color Schemes.  In this article I'd like to follow up by talking about taking your color scheme choices to the next level. Do you have a favorite color combination? Or maybe two or three? I think most of us have certain colors that we lean towards more than others. For me it's green. I've always loved green. And I also have a few other fave color combos as well (not necessarily all including green) I like TEAL and BROWN with maybe a touch of PINK accent. I'm always partial to OLIVE GREEN and ROSE as a color combination. And I do have a fondness for BLUE and YELLOW GOLD together.

Try stepping out of your comfort zone

But sometimes favorite color schemes can be a bit of a trap. You find yourself reaching for your favorites almost without realizing it as you survey your stash, choosing the elements for your next layout.  If you're like me, then you've gathered a huge stash of digital scrapbooking elements over time and diving in to choose the ones you want for your layout can be a bit overwhelming. So you fall back on the color schemes that you're most comfortable with. Well why not challenge yourself to stepping out of your comfort zone and experimenting with a few different and unexpected color schemes and see how you go?

Here are a few to get you started:

How about LIME GREEN and BLACK with just a touch of ORANGE Or get back to basics with RED BLUE and YELLOW Try putting BLUE and GREEN together with a accent of PINK forever.jpgStepping out of your comfort zone can be scary but it can also take your creativity in different directions as you look at your layouts from a new perspective. In making the Forever layout here (credits to the Scrap Girls Refresh Collection), I used colors that I would never ordinarily go for when creating a scrapbook layout. I deliberately pushed myself out of my comfort zone. And I can tell you it felt verrry uncomfortable at first. As you have read, my normal color preferences are very different from this color combination. But having made the jump, I'm really glad I did and I'm very happy with the resulting layout.  And because I pushed myself out of my comfort zone I'm even more pleased with how it turned out. So what about you? Are you ready to try out some new colors on your next layout?
